Happy Tuesday! I hope your week is going well!

Wow, this is the 20th edition of the Mishmash! Time flys!

Some personal new, I'm excited to announce that I will be joining Hive as a Senior Product Designer this coming Monday, where I'll be leading the design for new platform features and making the application more user-centric.

Alright, let's get on with the Mishmash!

Olympic Climbing

There are four new sports in the Tokyo Olympics — skateboarding, surfing, karate, and sport climbing. I'm particularly excited about the climbing which will start late next week. The climbing competition is split into three main categories:

  • Bouldering: short, super-tricky routes close to the ground.
  • Lead climbing: tall, challenging courses where climbers are belayed.
  • Speed climbing: relatively easy routes climbed very fast (6-8 secs).

Here's a video explaining what each one entails. Have you tried any of these before? I have been a fan of bouldering since all you need is some climbing shoes to get going.

The Bomber Mafia

I just recently finished an audiobook recommended by a friend called "Bomber Mafia" by Malcolm Gladwell. This book covers the history of a group called the Bomber Mafia and accounts for how two separate Major Generals, Major General Haywood S. Hansell and Major General Curtis LeMay, tactically approached war strategy using this aerial crew.

Interestingly, this book originated as an audiobook— having many recordings from the actual events and discussions involved in the book.

The Little Mermaid - Revisionist History

Two things from Malcolm Gladwell for this week!

In the first of three episodes, Malcolm explores the darker side of the Disney rendition of the 1989 movie The Little Mermaid, initially written by Hans Christian Andersen. It was an eye-opening discussion looking into some of the underlying messages and undertones throughout the story. Many of which I certainly didn't notice back when I was a kid.

Theorbo

The Theorbo is a string instrument created during the late sixteenth century in Italy. I recently came across this and enjoyed listening to the range and tones this instrument can produce. Plus, it just looks really cool.

Here's a video of one in action:

Here's another piece I've been listening to:

S. Bach - Suite in G minor by Klaudyna Żołnierek

💬 Quote of the Week

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

acorn

Happy Monday! I’ve always had a thing for sentimental objects. Over the years, I amassed a collection of nostalgia-packed trinkets in a small metal box, nearly bursting at the seams. I recently dug through this container of items and stumbled across one of my earliest additions — an acorn. I first picked up this acorn when I was ten. Summer break had begun, having completed 4th grade. I was officially an older kid. Practically a grown man minus some factors we’ll leave for anatomy class....

Happy Monday, everyone! As a change in pace, I am sharing one of my recently completed short stories this week. I'd love to hear what you thought and if I should include more in future editions. So, without further ado, let's dive in: Rogue and Classic 🍦 There was so much more than just a view from my home office. The densely wooded scenery across the street soon became the construction site for several large apartments. And while the building commotion quickly increased, I started to hear...

Happy Monday! Here’s the weekly dose of the Mishmash! Enjoy! Cool articles 103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known by Kevin Kelley. Kevin recently turned 70 and provided a massive list of unsolicited advice he’s amassed over the years. Every year he does this which is pretty neat. Some of my favorites from the list: When you are stuck, explain your problem to others. Often simply laying out a problem will present a solution. Make “explaining the problem” part of your troubleshooting process....
