Mishmash #22 | Ultramarathon recap | 🇬🇧 British Humor | A lesson at the DMV

Happy Monday!

Wow, it's been a while, but I haven't forgotten about the Mishmash! To make this project more sustainable with my schedule, I will be experimenting with posting every other week or monthly. After all, this newsletter is all about fun and exciting things, so we shall see! Alright, onto the Mishmash!

My first ultramarathon

Several weeks ago, I ran my first ultramarathon distance race (32.5 miles) in the mountains of North Carolina. I recently uploaded my recap of the race to my site, you can find it here.

Fonta Flora 50K Recap

With a 50 mile race set for next year, I also plan to mix in shorter road races, around the 5K and 10K distances. With the concentration on endurance in training, I'm interested to see how my training will play out for shorter distances.

🇬🇧 British Humor - Adrian Bliss

I've been a long-time Monty Python fan, and Adrian Bliss puts a new twist on the comedy that made Monty Python so great. I have these bookmarked if I ever need a quick laugh. Here are some of my favorites, but honestly, all of his work is amazing.

Patience and the DMV

I had the "pleasure" of going to the DMV to renew my license, and in a typical fashion, it was a lesson on patience...

Sitting on the hard plastic chairs underneath the glow of fluorescent lights, I was prepared for the long haul, having packed a new book and drawing notepad. Although, to the unfortunate people who came unprepared, they were subject to the never-ending TV broadcast of 80s sitcom trivia.

An hour passed, and the restlessness started creeping in. The lady sitting directly in front of me began to strike up conversations with those nearby to complain of the wait times and warn the newer entrants of the agony of the wait. She seemed close to her breaking point.

Another 30 minutes had passed when she rose from her seat and, with a long exasperated sigh, gave her ticket to a nearby person, stomping out of the DMV in disappointment.

The call for her ticket was 5 minutes later.

Having watched this whole situation go down, it had me thinking about how many times I was in her position, leaving right before the call.

Sometimes things can be right around the corner. Sometimes it just takes a little more patience.

That's it for this edition of the Mishmash! Thanks for tuning in and see you again soon!

acorn

Happy Monday! I’ve always had a thing for sentimental objects. Over the years, I amassed a collection of nostalgia-packed trinkets in a small metal box, nearly bursting at the seams. I recently dug through this container of items and stumbled across one of my earliest additions — an acorn. I first picked up this acorn when I was ten. Summer break had begun, having completed 4th grade. I was officially an older kid. Practically a grown man minus some factors we’ll leave for anatomy class....

Happy Monday, everyone! As a change in pace, I am sharing one of my recently completed short stories this week. I'd love to hear what you thought and if I should include more in future editions. So, without further ado, let's dive in: Rogue and Classic 🍦 There was so much more than just a view from my home office. The densely wooded scenery across the street soon became the construction site for several large apartments. And while the building commotion quickly increased, I started to hear...

Happy Monday! Here’s the weekly dose of the Mishmash! Enjoy! Cool articles 103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known by Kevin Kelley. Kevin recently turned 70 and provided a massive list of unsolicited advice he’s amassed over the years. Every year he does this which is pretty neat. Some of my favorites from the list: When you are stuck, explain your problem to others. Often simply laying out a problem will present a solution. Make “explaining the problem” part of your troubleshooting process....
