Mishmash #27 / lots of unsolicited advice

Happy Monday! Here’s the weekly dose of the Mishmash! Enjoy!

Cool articles

103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known by Kevin Kelley. Kevin recently turned 70 and provided a massive list of unsolicited advice he’s amassed over the years. Every year he does this which is pretty neat.

Some of my favorites from the list:

  • When you are stuck, explain your problem to others. Often simply laying out a problem will present a solution. Make “explaining the problem” part of your troubleshooting process.
  • Speak confidently as if you are right, but listen carefully as if you are wrong.
  • Efficiency is highly overrated; Goofing off is highly underrated. Regularly scheduled sabbaths, sabbaticals, vacations, breaks, aimless walks and time off are essential for top performance of any kind. The best work ethic requires a good rest ethic.
  • Don't ever work for someone you don't want to become.

18 Impactful Stories by Ryan Holiday - this was a fun read which a bunch of powerful messages in little bite sized stories.

Here's one of my favorites:

The writers Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse Five) and Joseph Heller (Catch-22) were at a glamorous party outside New York City. Standing in the palatial second home of the billionaire host, Vonnegut began to needle his friend. “Joe,” he said, “how does it feel that our host only yesterday may have made more money than your novel has earned in its entire history?”
“I’ve got something he can never have,” Heller replied.
“The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”

Resurrecting Coral Reefs - a pretty cool read on how they are using new techniques to restore coral reefs in the Florida Keys.

Math Art

This is so cool.

For those who prefer not to view it on twitter, here’s a link to view it on a live site. You can also change and adapt the code to change the behavior of the animation.

Useful products

The Dictionary of Color Combinations (Vol 1 & 2) by Sanzo Wada

I got these as a reference tool for future paintings and other graphic design work and I’ve been surprised by how often I use these. They have handy pre-selected color palettes to fit any need. I even took one with me to the art store recently to make sure I got the right paint colors.

Quote I’ve been thinking about:

Poet and novelist Margaret Atwood on the universal nature of writing:

"Everyone writes in a way; that is, each person has a "story," a personal narrative which is constantly being replayed, revised, taken apart, and put together again. The significant points in this narrative change as a person ages—what may have been tragedy at twenty is seen as comedy or nostalgia at forty. All children write. (And paint, and sing.) I suppose the real question is why do so many people give it up?"

acorn

Happy Monday! I’ve always had a thing for sentimental objects. Over the years, I amassed a collection of nostalgia-packed trinkets in a small metal box, nearly bursting at the seams. I recently dug through this container of items and stumbled across one of my earliest additions — an acorn. I first picked up this acorn when I was ten. Summer break had begun, having completed 4th grade. I was officially an older kid. Practically a grown man minus some factors we’ll leave for anatomy class....

Happy Monday, everyone! As a change in pace, I am sharing one of my recently completed short stories this week. I'd love to hear what you thought and if I should include more in future editions. So, without further ado, let's dive in: Rogue and Classic 🍦 There was so much more than just a view from my home office. The densely wooded scenery across the street soon became the construction site for several large apartments. And while the building commotion quickly increased, I started to hear...

Hello and happy Monday! 🌞 🏃 Running Updates I recently had to drop out of two races that I had planned (Tobacco Road Marathon and the Umstead 50). The training was going well, but I started noticing a pain in my left knee that gradually got worse. Thankfully after going to PT and taking some time off to recover, things are feeling close to normal. But throughout these past three weeks of recovery, I had a chance to look back at my training logs and try to uncover why I ended up with this...
