The Mishmash is coming out a day late. Sorry! But I'm back with the same content as before. I hope everyone had a great weekend and having a great start to the shortened workweek. Onto the Mishmash!

🍏 Pastila

Pastila is a confectionary dish that is usually served with tea. Even though the original recipes never survived the Russian Revolution, recreations of Pastila have come close to the authentic dish —described as having marshmellow like qualities; this piqued my sweet tooth.

🤯 One thing that surprised me is that it's made simply from apples, eggs, and sugar. It gets its marshmallow-like texture from a mix of the airy meringue qualities from egg whites and the gelatinous features from the pectin in apples.

🪵 3-D Printed Wood

The printing material a compound of bio-epoxy resin and sawdust. The mixture gives the printed material a look, feel, and similar strength to actual wood.

Even though this is very niche, it would be great to potentially see this as a commercial alternative to deforestation for wood resources.

You can shop for some of these printed products at Forust.com.

🌽 Corny Info 🤓

This article describes the recent price increase and resource distribution of one of our most versatile resources: corn.

🔍 Some interesting stats from the article:

  • Animal feed and ethanol production collectively make up around 73% of U.S. corn usage.
  • The U.S. is the world's largest producer and exporter of corn and accounted for roughly 36% of exports in 2020.
  • Since the beginning of 2020, corn prices have increased 68% and stand at around $6.50 per bushel as of May 19th
  • In addition to a drought-induced yield cut in Brazil, rising demand from China has driven corn prices to their highest level in the last eight years.

🥇 Record 1500m

3:34.36

Hobbs Kessler, an 18-year high school senior, recently broke a long-standing record held by Alan Webb for the 1500m and managed to get the Olympic qualifying standard. This run would roughly convert to a 3:51 mile.

What makes this such a mind-blowing performance was not only that Hobb brought down the high-school record by 4 seconds, but his performance is now faster than the current 1500m collegiate record.

I'd argue this stands as one of the most outstanding high school track performances.

Happy Monday! I’ve always had a thing for sentimental objects. Over the years, I amassed a collection of nostalgia-packed trinkets in a small metal box, nearly bursting at the seams. I recently dug through this container of items and stumbled across one of my earliest additions — an acorn. I first picked up this acorn when I was ten. Summer break had begun, having completed 4th grade. I was officially an older kid. Practically a grown man minus some factors we’ll leave for anatomy class....

Happy Monday, everyone! As a change in pace, I am sharing one of my recently completed short stories this week. I'd love to hear what you thought and if I should include more in future editions. So, without further ado, let's dive in: Rogue and Classic 🍦 There was so much more than just a view from my home office. The densely wooded scenery across the street soon became the construction site for several large apartments. And while the building commotion quickly increased, I started to hear...

Happy Monday! Here’s the weekly dose of the Mishmash! Enjoy! Cool articles 103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known by Kevin Kelley. Kevin recently turned 70 and provided a massive list of unsolicited advice he’s amassed over the years. Every year he does this which is pretty neat. Some of my favorites from the list: When you are stuck, explain your problem to others. Often simply laying out a problem will present a solution. Make “explaining the problem” part of your troubleshooting process....
